30 x 30

Climate change is among the many factors cited as a cause for declining biodiversity observed in many parts of the world. With some referring to this as a “biodiversity crisis,” the 30 by 30 (aka 30x30) was born as a global effort to protect 30% of the world’s lands and waters by 2030. In the US, several states have seen 30x30 legislation proposed during their legislative sessions, while some governors have issued executive orders related to the initiative. Likewise, President Joe Biden’s administration identified 30x30 as a key priority in his January 2021 Executive Order (EO) and, subsequently, in the May 2021 “America the Beautiful” report.

30x30 proposals that prioritize conservation over preservation, including voluntary efforts on private lands, and the importance of maintaining and enhancing access for sportsmen and women show promise. However, we must remain vigilant against attempts to exclude the voices of sportsmen and women in favor of ineffective preservation efforts that do little to promote biodiversity conservation while limiting access for Americans seeking to spend time outdoors. To learn more about the sportsmen’s community’s statement regarding 30x30 efforts, how hunters and anglers are the foundation of biodiversity conservation in the United States, or for more information on the global 30x30 Initiative, visit HuntFish3030.com
